🔄 What Has Been Agreed in the Brexit Reset Deal?
UK and EU leaders recently met at a high-level summit to agree on a renewed partnership focused on improving trade and cooperation. The following key areas were addressed:
🥩 Food & Drink Trade
The UK and EU have agreed to reduce border checks on food and drink exports. This will make it easier for British products — such as Scottish salmon, sausages, and burgers — to be sold in the EU, streamlining the process for exporters and cutting red tape.
🎣 Fishing
A new 12-year agreement allows EU fishing vessels to continue operating in UK waters until 2038. Annual meetings will be held between the UK and EU to set catch quotas and issue fishing licences. This aims to ensure a sustainable and cooperative approach to shared waters.
👩🎓 Youth Mobility
The two sides have agreed in principle to create a Youth Mobility Scheme, which would give young people opportunities to live, work, or travel in Europe again. While the scheme will be limited in numbers and duration, it marks a potential return of some of the freedoms previously lost under Brexit.
✈️ Travel
UK travellers will benefit from improved access at European airports, with more countries allowing the use of e-gates, helping to reduce long queues at passport control. In addition, a new agreement will make it easier for UK pet owners to travel with their animals in the EU.
🌍 Environment
The UK and EU have agreed to link their carbon markets, helping to prevent extra carbon taxes on goods such as steel and cement traded between the two sides. This aims to support greener industry practices while maintaining a level playing field.
🛡️ Security & Defence
A formal security and defence cooperation agreement has been reached. The UK and EU will now work more closely to share intelligence and coordinate efforts to protect both sides from common threats, enhancing collective safety.
This renewed deal signals a shift toward practical cooperation after years of tension, with an emphasis on rebuilding ties in trade, travel, and shared values.
